It's safe to say the Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the worst teams in the league, and they won't get anywhere soon. The acquisition of Mike Babcock and trade for Kaspari Kapanen changed those thoughts. But those thought reverted to shame in the first 10 games of the season. I bet they wish they had Phil Kessel still, amirite?
The $50 million contract Mike Babcock signed last June was supposed to be a turning point for the rebuild of the Toronto Maple Laughs, but it was all just hype. The Laughs have started out at 1-7-2, 8th in the Atlantic Division, and last in the league. Their leading scorer is Dion Phaneuf surprisingly with 0 goals, 7 assists, and 7 points in 10 games played. Other notable names: Morgan Reilly (2g, 3a, 5p), James Van Riemsdyk (4g, 1a, 5p), and Jonathan Bernier (0-6-1, 3.02 GAA, .899 SV%). Their other goaltender, Jim Reimer, has their only win, with a GAA of 3.24 and a save percentage of .876. On the other side of the Phil Kessel trade, Phil "the Thrill" has 4 goals, 2 assists, and 6 points, one more than Crosby and 2nd on the team behind Evgeni Malkin (11).
The acquisition of Mike Babcock raised the stakes for Toronto, as a Olympic Gold coach was in town now after serving his tenure with the Detroit Red Wings, making the playoffs every year. We assumed that Toronto was back in the game, but it was all just stories, and tall tales. Toronto is still one of the worst teams in the league, at least until Mitch Marner (18, 1st round, 3rd overall, 2015) is good enough to play in the NHL.
