Should Dennis Wideman get Suspended/Fined?
On January 27, 2016, the Calgary Flames lost to the Nashville Panthers 2-1. During the game in the 2nd, number 6, Dennis Wideman, got checked cleanly by Paul Gaustad and fell to the ice. When he got up it looked like he was hurt because he was holding his head. He was skating to the bench slowly while the play was heading the other way. A linesman was skating backwards not realizing Wideman was behind him. He and Wideman ended up colliding in front of the Nashville bench. From what it looked like at normal speed, it looks like Wideman gave a cross-check in anger directed at the refs. The coach stated that, "We know Wides, he is not the type of person of anger. We know he wouldn't deliberately aim for a ref." Wideman stated, "Over my 11 year career, I have treated refs with the utmost respect. I would never aim for a ref after a bad hit. [Gaustad's] hit was clean, and I was slow to get up. After everything was over, later in the game I skated over to [the refs] and apologized." He did tell the truth about that. He did go over and apologize for the accident. The rule book states any directed hits or shots at the ref is a minimum 20 game suspension. If he does get suspended, it will surely be a big blow to the struggling Flames. Personally, after going back and watching it a million freaking times, I noticed that Wideman tried to get out of the way at the last second. He tries to push to the right to avoid the linesman, but it was too late. I think Dennis shouldn't get suspended 20+ games because it's evident it's an accident, and if not, give him an Oscar because he convinced me.
